On August 4, 2017, my beloved mother and queen, Mattie R. Powell received her wings and her spirit took flight to rest in the arms of Jesus. She was one of the nicest and sweetest people that you ever want to meet. Her trademark was her scarves. Oh, what she could do with a scarf was amazing! My mother meant the world to me and she was as classy as they get. At the "historic" Fredrick Douglass High School located in Baltimore, Maryland where my mother attended, she was noted for being, "Demure". Mattie was very active in social and professional organizations such as BPW, where she held several positions and the LINKS. Mom was well known in both community and church. Mattie had a heart of giving especially to children who wanted to attend college but many times the parents didn't have the funds. Mattie would help out until many had completed college. As my mother and I spent her last hours together, I began to tell her how I would do all that I could to continue to keep her legacy alive. I knew how important this was to her especially when it came to investing in our youth. With the cost of education which extends beyond tuition, I intend to allocate a specific amount of funds to be used for text books, school supplies, housing, and tuition for students from Clayton County, Georgia. There is a special Mattie R. Powell Scholarship Fund at Georgia United Credit Union. Robbin Purvis (Founder/Executive Director) along with the Board Members of the Mattie R. Powell Scholarship Funds will delegate who the scholarship funds will be given to. Thank you so much.
